Chapter Fifteen

I didn’t want to go home. I wanted to stay up all night, all day, all week if that’s what it took to find Daniel and the other kidnapped kids.

But according to Lienna, getting sleep was an order straight from the mouth of our demanding boss, and Blythe’s orders were always to be followed and, in Lienna’s book, without question. So, we crammed ourselves back into the smart car and headed for my apartment.

“I’ll take the briefcase home,” she told me as we drove up the ramp out of the parking garage. “I can try some spells there, but there are a lot of runes I don’t recognize. Might need to do some research.”

I nodded absently, my mind elsewhere. “Who do you think it could be?”

“The mole? I have no idea. Neither of us has worked here long enough to even guess.”

“What about that Internal Affairs guy? Söze? Who the hell was he?”

“I don’t know much about Internal Affairs. They usually only show up when there’s trouble.” She wrinkled her nose in distaste. “Maybe someone higher up has caught on to the mole in our precinct, and they sent Söze to sniff them out.”

“Then why would Captain Blythe hide our investigation from him?” I slumped back in my seat. “If only we’d caught that kidnapping bastard at his hideout. We’d have all the answers we need.”

“Maybe, maybe not.”

I canted my head toward her. Streetlamps shone through the car’s windows, flashing across her face. “Meaning what?”

She hesitated, her lips thinning. “The information leaks help Zak more than the kidnapper. There’s a good chance he’s the one who bought or blackmailed an agent.”

I scoffed. “Zak’s been on the MPD’s radar for eight years. Do you think he, all by himself and only eighteen years old at best, bought a mole in the MPD? Compare that to Varvara, who had a whole network of criminal lieutenants running million-dollar businesses for her. Who seems more likely to have bought a mole?”

“Varvara,” Lienna admitted. “But we can’t be sure. Our safest option—safest for us and Daniel—is to avoid Zak and arrest him if we run into him again. He helped us find the kidnapper’s lair, but there’s nothing more we can get from him.”

“You don’t know that. Maybe he already caught the kidnapper and saved Daniel.”

“Then our suspect is dead.” She gripped the steering wheel. “We can’t trust anyone, Kit.”

“What about our boss? Do you trust her?”

Lienna’s eyebrows popped up. “Captain Blythe?”

“Think about it,” I said. “No one else has made a peep about information leaks. What if it’s a cover story to keep us isolated from the whole department and manipulate us into doing exactly what she wants, totally off the radar? What if she’s the mole, and that Internal Affairs agent is here to investigate her?”

“Now you’re really sounding paranoid, Kit.”

“What about Shane Davila?” I plowed on. “You can’t tell me that Muppet in human skin didn’t give you the heebie-jeebies. He’s an unguilded bounty hunter who was given special access to the farm crime scene by none other than Blythe.
